DESIGNING THE DESIGN

The course introduces students to concepts and techniques in computational design. It aims at training graduates with the ability to design, optimize, model, and build utilizing hybrid methodologies of design such as sketching, physical modeling, material research, computational design, data integration into design optimization, design for disassembly, and fabrication.

The course is structured in four modules: the first module introduces students with relevant literature and design-build examples that utilized various techniques in design development stages. The second module will focus on system design and production. Here, material properties (physical/chemical) their effect on material behavior, connection details, assembly/disassembly, and recyclability of the system design will be explored. The third module will consist of Pavilion design competition. Students in groups will compete for the best pavilion concept design that has elaborated and optimized data integration into design system and material design for easy assembly/disassembly and recyclability. The design groups are expected to present their design proposals by defining their “Designing the Design” process.

The evaluation criteria’s of design competition will be announced.

The fourth module is design development, production (system development), fabrication (system assembly/disassembly) and construction of the first winner's pavilion design.

The final product of the studio will be the erection of Pavilion on the site provided by İstanbul Great Municipality Cultural Site Directorate in İstanbul.
